November 1, 1955-1959:
October 26, 1955: South Vietnam declares itself the Republic of Vietnam, with newly elected Ngo Dinh Diem as president.
March 1959: Ho Chi Minh declared all out war in order to unite Vietnam under one rule.
1960-1964:
December 1961: US military advisors began to take a direct role in the war.
August 1964: The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution is passed by the US Congress after two US Destroyers were attacked by the North Vietnamese. This allowed US troops to use armed force in the area.
1965-1969:
March 8, 1965: The first official US combat troops arrive in Vietnam. The US begins a bombing campaign of Northern Vietnam called Operation Rolling Thunder.
January 30, 1968: North Vietnam launched the Tet Offensive attacking around 100 cities in Southern Vietnam.
January 30 - March 3, 1968: The battle of Hue, one of the bloodiest and longest battle to occur during the Vietnam War.
March 16, 1968: My Lai Massacre Thảm sát Mỹ Lai ( On March 16, the angry and frustrated men of Charlie Company, 11th Brigade, Americal Division entered the village of My Lai.)
July 1969: President Nixon begins the withdrawal of US troops.
September 2, 1969: Hồ Chí Minh, the Vietnamese communist revolutionary leader of Vietnam, dies at the age of 79.
1970-1975:
March 1972: The North Vietnamese attack across the border in the Easter Offensive.
1973: Paris Peace Accord was signed-ceasefire took place for nearly 2 months.
April 30, 1975: Fall of Saigon (the capture of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, by the People's Army of Vietnam and the National Liberation Front on April 30, 1975.)
